Two terms often used interchangeably — but they solve completely different problems.
A regular HDMI cable is practically limited to around 10-15m before the signal starts degrading or dropping. An extender solves distance only: it takes an HDMI signal from one source and carries it much farther (usually over Cat6/Cat6A cable or fiber) to a single display at the other end.
A splitter solves a completely different problem: mirroring the same content to more than one screen at once (a presentation screen plus a meeting-room monitor, for example). Distance isn't its concern at all — most splitters are designed for short runs (same room or cabinet).
A project that needs to distribute one source to two displays far from it (two different floors, for example) needs both together: a splitter to divide the signal, then an extender on each output to reach the required distance. This is exactly the kind of call worth a direct conversation rather than guessing.
