Connector anatomy

3.5 mm jack

01 Tip Carries the left channel in stereo use, or the whole signal in mono.
02 Ring The right channel. Crackle when you wiggle the plug is this ring losing contact.
03 Sleeve The common ground — the voltage reference the signal is measured against.
04 Insulating bands The black bands keep the conductors apart. Without them the channels short to ground.
05 Strain-relief boot Stops the wires flexing where they leave the plug — the exact point most cables fail.
06 Outer jacket The outer sheath protecting the conductors inside from abrasion and moisture.

How it works

Unbalanced audio cable

Two independent conductors (left and right) share one ground braid. Neither channel gets noise cancellation, which is why hum and hiss appear after a few metres.

01 Left and right conductors Each channel carries its own signal, referenced to the shared ground.
02 Shield A grounded conductive wrap that absorbs electromagnetic interference before it reaches the signal.
03 Outer jacket Protects everything inside mechanically. It plays no electrical role.

How it works

A jack plug carries the signal on three parts: the tip for the left channel, the ring for the right, and the sleeve as common ground, separated by insulating bands. The 3.5 mm and 6.35 mm sizes are electrically identical and differ only in size, which is why an adapter between them is just wire. Crackle when the plug is moved is worn contact at the ring, not a fault in the equipment.
