Composite/stereo RCA uses yellow for video and white/red for stereo audio; the 3.5mm end carries the same stereo pair via its TRS tip/ring/sleeve wiring, converted to the two RCA audio plugs.

01 Centre pin Carries the signal itself — one channel of audio, or a whole composite video picture.
02 Outer collar Ground and shield in one. It mates before the centre pin, which is what stops the loud pop.
03 Colour code Red is right, white is left, yellow is composite video. A convention only — electrically the plugs are identical.
04 Strain-relief boot Stops the wires flexing where they leave the plug — the exact point most cables fail.

01 Tip Carries the left channel in stereo use, or the whole signal in mono.

How it works

A modern TV often outputs audio only digitally, over an optical or coaxial S/PDIF cable, with no analogue output at all. The converter carries a real DAC chip that rebuilds the analogue waveform from the digital stream, so it can drive RCA or a 3.5mm jack into a traditional amplifier or speakers that only understand analogue audio.
