N-TYPE Connector (Female)

RF-NTYPE-F

A N-TYPE connector terminated onto the end of a coaxial cable.

Type: Adapter
Connectors: N-TYPE

In-depth technical details

This is a 50-ohm RF connector using a threaded coupling nut -- screwed on rather than BNC's quarter-turn bayonet lock -- torqued for consistent performance at high frequency. SMA and N-type are both real 50-ohm RF connector families; N-type is the larger, more rugged, weatherproof-capable version of the same concept.

Connector anatomy

N-type connector

01 Centre pin Carries the RF signal, surrounded by a dielectric and then an outer shield that holds the 50-ohm impedance constant.
02 Threaded coupling nut Screws on rather than snapping like BNC's bayonet lock -- torqued with a wrench for consistent performance at high frequency.
03 Strain-relief boot Stops the wires flexing where they leave the plug — the exact point most cables fail.
04 Outer jacket The outer sheath protecting the conductors inside from abrasion and moisture.

How it works

SMA and N-type connectors are used on high-frequency coaxial runs such as wireless antenna feeds, and their matched impedance (typically 50 ohm) preserves the signal across the join. SMA is a small, finger-tightened threaded connector for light-duty use; N-type is larger and mechanically stronger, used on thicker cable or outdoor installations exposed to vibration.

Typical impedance: 50 ohm
SMA: Small, threaded, hand-tightened — light-duty RF
N-type: Larger, more robust — thicker cable and outdoor use
