A boot slides over an RJ45 plug's body and latch, protecting the latch tab from snapping when the cable is pulled or scrapes against panel edges -- ten colors allow a dedicated color per section or circuit in a large network install (one color per floor, for example), not just distinguishing the two ends of a single cable.
