USB20-SND
Adds headphone and microphone jacks over USB, bypassing a faulty or missing onboard audio.
USB-A carries just 4 pins: VBUS (+5V power), a D+/D- differential data pair, and GND -- the simplest USB pinout, with no reversibility and no Power Delivery negotiation lines.

From the published standard
The external card carries its own digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) for playback and analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) for the microphone, entirely separate from the motherboard's built-in audio circuitry. That is why it fixes onboard-audio noise or failure -- the conversion happens entirely inside the external device, not on the motherboard.
