3.5mm to 2x RCA Cable - 3m

AUD-RCA-3M

3.5mm stereo to two RCA plugs, for amplifiers and mixers. Length 3 metres.

Length
3 m
Connectors
3.5mm / RCA
In-depth technical details

The 3.5mm (TRS) end of this cable is wired tip=left, ring=right, sleeve=ground, and splits into two RCA plugs using the standard stereo-audio color code -- white = left channel, red = right channel.

End A

3.5 mm jack

  • 01 Tip Carries the left channel in stereo use, or the whole signal in mono.
  • 02 Ring The right channel. Crackle when you wiggle the plug is this ring losing contact.
  • 03 Sleeve The common ground — the voltage reference the signal is measured against.
  • 04 Insulating bands The black bands keep the conductors apart. Without them the channels short to ground.
  • 05 Strain-relief boot Stops the wires flexing where they leave the plug — the exact point most cables fail.
  • 06 Outer jacket The outer sheath protecting the conductors inside from abrasion and moisture.

End B

RCA / phono

  • 01 Centre pin Carries the signal itself — one channel of audio, or a whole composite video picture.
  • 02 Outer collar Ground and shield in one. It mates before the centre pin, which is what stops the loud pop.
  • 03 Colour code Red is right, white is left, yellow is composite video. A convention only — electrically the plugs are identical.
  • 04 Strain-relief boot Stops the wires flexing where they leave the plug — the exact point most cables fail.
  • 05 Outer jacket The outer sheath protecting the conductors inside from abrasion and moisture.

How it works

Unbalanced audio cable

Two independent conductors (left and right) share one ground braid. Neither channel gets noise cancellation, which is why hum and hiss appear after a few metres.

  • 01 Left and right conductors Each channel carries its own signal, referenced to the shared ground.
  • 02 Shield A grounded conductive wrap that absorbs electromagnetic interference before it reaches the signal.
  • 03 Outer jacket Protects everything inside mechanically. It plays no electrical role.

From the published standard

How it works

In an unbalanced connection one conductor carries the signal while the braid serves as both ground and shield. There is no inverted copy to cancel noise, so hum and hiss start to appear after a few metres, particularly near mains cable or power supplies. For long runs the answer is a balanced connection, not a longer unbalanced cable.

Principle
Single-ended — no noise cancellation
Practical length
Short runs; hum risk grows with distance and nearby mains
Colour convention
Red = right, white = left, yellow = composite video
