01 Inner pin Positive by the usual convention. Reversed polarity destroys a device instantly, so never assume compatibility from shape alone.
02 Outer barrel Negative. The barrel and pin diameters (5.5 × 2.1 mm, for example) are what actually decide whether it fits.

How it works

The adapter sets the voltage and the device draws whatever current it needs. So the rule is: voltage must match exactly, while current only needs to be equal or higher. A 5 A supply feeding a device that draws 2 A is perfectly safe, and the reverse overheats the supply and fails. Polarity and plug size, 5.5 × 2.1 mm for example, must also match; reversed polarity destroys a device immediately.
