In-depth technical details

HDMI Type-A carries 19 pins, not just the video signal: TMDS pairs for the picture itself, CEC (single-wire remote control across connected devices), DDC/+5V (the EDID handshake -- how the source learns which resolutions the display supports), and HPD (Hot Plug Detect -- how the source knows a display is connected at all).

Connector anatomy

HDMI Type-A

  • 01 19 pins Three differential TMDS pairs carry picture and sound, a fourth carries the clock, and the rest are named-function pins.
  • 02 CEC A single wire that lets one remote control multiple connected devices, e.g. a TV and a receiver.
  • 03 DDC / +5V The EDID handshake -- how the source learns which resolutions the display supports.
  • 04 HPD Hot Plug Detect -- how the source knows a display is connected at all.
  • 05 Metal shell The shell is grounded and wraps the pins, keeping interference out of a very high-frequency signal.
  • 06 Strain-relief boot Stops the wires flexing where they leave the plug — the exact point most cables fail.
  • 07 Outer jacket The outer sheath protecting the conductors inside from abrasion and moisture.

How it works

Fibre-optic HDMI cable construction

The data (TMDS) is converted to light pulses travelling down a single glass core, so it does not degrade with cable length or pick up electromagnetic interference the way copper does. Separate thin copper wires still carry the 5V power and the slow DDC/CEC control signals, because converting those to light is not practical at their low data rate.

  • 01 Optical glass core Carries the picture/audio data as light. No electrical resistance building up with length, which is what makes runs well past 20m possible without signal loss.
  • 02 Copper control/power wires The 5V line and the DDC/CEC channels stay copper, since their data rate is low enough that copper remains the practical choice.
  • 03 Fixed signal direction The electrical-to-optical circuit at one end differs from the optical-to-electrical circuit at the other, so the source and display ends usually cannot be swapped.
  • 04 Outer jacket Protects everything inside mechanically. It plays no electrical role.

How it works

An active optical cable converts the HDMI signal into light inside the connector itself, sends it down glass fibre, and converts it back to electrical at the far end. Ordinary copper loses a 4K signal after roughly 15 metres; light does not have that limit, which is why 40 and 50 metre lengths exist. It is directional, though: the end marked Source must go into the source, and reversing it does not work.

Directional
Yes — source and display ends are not interchangeable
Why copper cannot do this
High-frequency loss makes passive copper unreliable for 4K past roughly 15 m
