In-depth technical details

VGA (DE-15) carries 3 analog color signals (R/G/B), separate HSync/VSync timing lines, and a real DDC (I²C) channel on pins 12/15 -- the same "source reads the display's real capabilities" concept as HDMI's DDC, just older. Most of the 15 pins are colour+sync; only 2 carry the actual capability-handshake data.

Connector anatomy

VGA (HD-15)

  • 01 15 pins Three analogue colour signals (red, green, blue) plus horizontal and vertical sync, each on its own pin.
  • 02 DDC (I²C) The EDID handshake -- how the source learns which resolutions the display supports.
  • 03 D-shaped shell The D profile only fits one way round, so the plug cannot be inserted upside-down and bend its pins.
  • 04 Thumbscrews Hand-tightened to hold the plug home. A loose one is why a picture flickers, or loses one colour channel.
  • 05 Strain-relief boot Stops the wires flexing where they leave the plug — the exact point most cables fail.
  • 06 Outer jacket The outer sheath protecting the conductors inside from abrasion and moisture.

How it works

VGA cable construction

VGA is analogue: the voltage on the red, green and blue lines is the brightness of that colour at that instant. That is why it degrades with length, because the voltage itself weakens. Digital HDMI either works or it does not.

  • 01 Three coax cores: R, G, B Each colour gets its own miniature coax, because any crosstalk between them shows up immediately as a colour cast.
  • 02 Sync and data lines Horizontal and vertical sync tell the monitor where each line and each frame begins.
  • 03 Shield A grounded conductive wrap that absorbs electromagnetic interference before it reaches the signal.
  • 04 Outer jacket Protects everything inside mechanically. It plays no electrical role.

From the published standard

How it works

VGA is analogue: a voltage on each of the red, green and blue lines represents that colour's brightness moment by moment, with separate horizontal and vertical sync lines. Because the information *is* the voltage, every extra metre genuinely weakens it — the picture softens and ghosting appears with length, a gradual decline rather than a sudden cut-out. The "3+6" name refers to three coaxial cores for the colours and six control conductors.

Signal type
Analogue RGBHV
Connector
HD-15, 15 pins in three rows
Behaviour with length
Gradual softening and ghosting, not an abrupt loss
Construction
3 coaxial colour cores + 6 control conductors ("3+6")
